Improvement on particle tracking tool for accelerator simulations at LNLS (2024)

  • Abstract: In particle accelerators, tools for simulating particle dynamics are essential to study, optimize, and operate real machines. The Trackcpp application, developed by the Accelerator Physics Group (FAC) at the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory (LNLS), models the SIRIUS accelerators and simulates particle tracking (tracking of space and time evolution of particles) using maps in a six-dimensional (6D) coordinate system. The path length, one of these coordinates, measures the arrival time difference between a particle and a special particle called the synchronous particle (SP) in units of space. This is fundamental for describing the interaction of radiofrequency (RF) cavities and particles, since the arrival time of particles at these elements determines the energy they receive. However, in Trackcpp, the path length is implemented as the path deviation of a particle relative to the length of an accelerator’s design orbit, which leads to limitations when simulating the longitudinal motion of particles in accelerators that operate with non-nominal RF frequency. This work proposes a modification to the path length variable to accurately simulate the longitudinal dynamics, under varied RF frequencies. The modification was validated through particle tracking simulations that demonstrated expected and physically correct particle behaviors.
